Beware! Rat delicacies, dirty environment breed Lassa feve

At the peak of the Ebola Virus Disease that killed hundreds of people in West Africa, including Nigeria, the conversation among stakeholders about the major carriers of the killer virus then centred on eating fruit bats and bush meat.
The outbreak of Lassa fever in Nigeria is toeing the same line. Already, doctors, virologists, among others, are also pointing to the animal kingdom as the harbinger of the current disease that has resulted in the death of 41 persons and the hospitalisation of 93 other Nigerians. In fact, some medics and state governments on Tuesday warned that the consumption and preparation of rat delicacies might be behind the transmission of the Lassa virus.
For a virologist, Dr. Olumide Adunbarin, there is indeed a link between rats and Lassa fever.
According to Adunbarin, a species of rodents, Multimammate rat, which breeds in Nigeria and is often eaten as delicacies in many parts of the country, introduced the virus into the human body.
He said, “The reservoir, or host, of the Lassa virus is a rodent known as the Multimammate rat of the genusMastomys. It has small breasts all over it and gives birth to little rats too. Mastomys rodents are sometimes used as a food source. The infection may occur via a direct contact when people prepare these rodents for food.
“These rodents are a delicacy in many states in the North and the South West. I will suggest that people avoid them, especially now that there is an outbreak.”
Another public health physician, Dr. Taiwo Ladipo, also warned that apart from eating rodents, those who are exposed to the blood and secretion of an infected rat might also contract the virus.
Ladipo, who is the Acting Director, Public Health, Ministry of Health, Oyo State, noted that persons who came in contact with the blood, urine and faeces of rats were at the risk of contracting the virus.
He added, “Eating rodents should be avoided for now. Also important is to prevent contact with blood, urine and faeces of rats even when killing them. If you eat food items contaminated with urine and droppings from an infected rat then you can be infected. The best thing is to store all food items in sealed containers.”
Adunbarin and Ladipo also advised Nigerians to take environmental sanitation and community management of refuse more seriously. According to them, rats hide and breed in dirty environments and open refuse dumps.
They said, “There is an air-borne transmission of Lassa virus. One can be exposed to the virus if one inhales tiny particles in the air contaminated with rodent excretions. That is why there is the need for a proper personal and household management of refuse to keep rodents away from our homes and environment.
“Indiscriminate dumping of refuse should be avoided as these are potential breeding grounds for rats. Clearing of bushes and refuse to reduce hiding and breeding spaces for rats is also important.”
To ensure that Nigerians do not die needlessly from the fever which doctors said was curable when detected early, Adunbarin particularly recommended that any one experiencing respiratory distress, bleeding in the gums, repeated vomiting, facial swelling, and partial hearing loss should report to the nearest hospital during this period.
The medic advised that while some states still battled with the Lassa outbreak, health workers should treat patients with symptoms of high fever with a high index of suspicion.
Adunbarin added, “The most common symptom of Lassa fever is deafness. Various degrees of deafness occur in approximately one-third of infections. I will advise Nigerians to check any fever that has lasted for more than two weeks with a doctor not a pharmacist or chemist.
“Doctors must also have a high degree of suspicion when treating patients now. Wear protective garment because Lassa fever is highly contagious and can spread through person-to-person contact just like the Ebola Virus Disease.”

Switzerland to return $300m looted funds to FG

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has assured Nigerians that negotiations are ongoing with a number of countries on the modalities for the repatriation of some looted funds stashed abroad.
The minister stated that the Federal Government had been in touch with Switzerland, which he said, had earlier repatriated $700m to Nigeria. He noted that another $300m that was recovered would soon be repatriated to Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview with journalists in Abuja, Onyeama stated that the Federal Government was in discussion with the United Kingdom, the United States, among other foreign governments around the world, on how all looted funds could be recovered.
He said, “We are in touch with Switzerland; they have recently recovered quite a significant amount of money and I met last week with Swiss representatives to work out the modality for the repatriation of the funds.
“The Swiss government has already repatriated over $700m from (the late Gen. Sani) Abacha loot and that agreement has been reached on how the money would be applied.
“They have also now recovered in the same context another $300m of which there is ongoing discussion to have that repatriated as well. There are discussions with other countries; United Kingdom for instance, as you all know, is one of the countries we are discussing with on how to recover looted funds.
The minister explained that the goodwill generated by President Muhammadu Buhari’s visits to the US and other countries had helped in getting various nations to cooperate with Nigeria on the loot recovery drive.

Nine-year-old tortured with hot water for ‘stealing’ crayfish

A nine-year-old housemaid, Precious Chinwedu, says she is still having pains two weeks after her boss, Mrs. Ifeoma Mbakwe, poured hot water on her for allegedly stealing crayfish.
The incident happened around 8pm on December 27 on Idowu Oya Street, Agbado, Lagos State.
The primary 3 pupil, who spoke with PUNCH Metro on Friday at Rem-Yems, a private hospital in Agbado, where she was admitted, said the woman had sent her to bring the crayfish in the kitchen.
Chinwedu said she had explained to her boss that she could not find the crayfish, but the woman accused her of eating it without her permission. She said Mbakwe angrily took a small pestle and hit her in the head.
Not done, Mbakwe, the mother of a seven-month-old baby, reportedly bit the girl in the back before pouring the hot water on her.
She said, “She (Mbakwe) said I should bring crayfish, but I told her I did not see it. She said I ate it. She used something we used to grind pepper to hit my head. She bit me in the back and poured hot water on me.”
The girl, who hails from Orlu, Imo State, said, apart from regular beating, the woman would not give her lunch, adding that she wanted to go back to her parents.
“She does not give me food regularly. There is no food for me in the afternoon when I come back from the school. Sometimes, she would not give me food in the evening. I was brought to Lagos in July. She always beat me. I want to go back to my parents,” she said.
A nurse at the hospital, who did not want her name in print, said the clothes which Chinwedu wore when she was brought to the hospital was removed from her body with scissors.
“The woman said the girl mistakenly poured hot water on herself. She was in pains. We have treated her and she is now getting better,” she said.
A neigbour of Ifeoma, who identified herself as Abe, said they had cautioned her to stop beating the girl to no avail.
“If any of the neighbours gave her food, she would beat her. We talked to her several times to stop beating the girl, but she refused. I was not at home on the day the incident happend, she did not allow anybody to intervene,” she added.
The President, Youth Alive Ojokoro, Babalola Saheed, said Mbakwe initially said the girl was her child, but later told the police that she was her housemaid and that she punished her for stealing a piece of meat.
He said, “A member called me on December 30, 2015, to come to the hospital to see the girl. I met the woman and asked how it happened. She lied that the girl was her daughter.
“She was not remorseful. I contacted the Ojokoro Police Station and she was arrested.
“She was later transferred to Isokoko Police Division and she told the police that the girl stole a piece of meat from the pot and ate the baby’s food.
“We later learnt that she had taken her to a nurse for treatment before she brought her to the hospital.”
Meanwhile, Mbakwe had been arraigned before an Ogba Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday on two counts of assault.
She was granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum after she pleaded not guilty to the counts.
The case was adjourned till January 27, 2016.
